What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique alpha-numeric name used to identify a particular computer (i.e. Web server or mail server) on the Internet. Domain names allow Internet users to type in a name, such as domain.co.in, to identify a numeric address such as 207.66.50.208. The purpose of domain names is to allow ordinary users connected to the Internet to find Web sites and send email to addresses with familiar names such as "domain.co.in" without having to memorize the numerical addresses that actually locate the computers or servers on the Internet.

What is a Top Level Domain (TLD)?

A top level domain (TLD) is the suffix that is attached to the end of a domain name. For instance, in the domain name myname.com, ".com" is the TLD. There are two types of top-level domains: global and country code. Global Top Level Domains (gTLD) were created to be used by the Internet public, while country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD) were created to be used by each individual country, as they see fit. The global Top Level Domains are as follows: .com .net .org .edu .mil .gov. A country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) is what the .in domain is for India.

What is the .in domain used for?

The .in domain is meant to be used by Indian organizations and individuals.

Should I register a .in and/or a .com?

A .in domain can be accessed by anyone on the internet. So, they are as equally valid a domain name as any .com. There have been over 18 million .com domain names registered to date. In contrast, there have been approximately 5000 .in domains registered to date. This is largely due to the fact that .in domains have been under heavy restrictions until recently. Now anyone can register as many .in domains as they wish to pay for. This will likely see a dramatic increase in registrations, visibility and popularity of .in domain names. With so many .com domains already registered, it is difficult to find a suitable name that is available for registration. So, it is really a personal choice to make as to whether or not a .in or .com domain is best for you.

Do I need a website to register a .in domain?

You do not need a website at the time of registration, however, you will not be able to use your domain name until you provide the full DNS hostnames and IP addresses of two unique nameservers. If you do not provide this information during the on-line registration process, you can at anytime in the future update your DNS information by making such request to our support team.
